GOLDEN RULES OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
1. Reusability in packaging is probably the most important commitment to the environment and friendly packaging.2. Inks- utilizing the proper inks that are free from harmful pigments. A number of colors wereremoved from the existing PANTONE coated pallets as they contain chemicals as determined by theEnvironmental Protection Agency (EPA). The toxicity problems mainly lie in the warn reds thatcontain Barium, which, if inhaled can lead to lung irritation and have also been know to cause heartsproblems.3. Do not mix different materials / mono-materials - recycling requires that all elements in a packageare the same. As an example, shopping bags that have plastic lamination or handles that are not ofthe same material interfere or prohibit with recycling. Do not laminate paper with plastic.4. Must consider transportation, distances, consumption of oil in your calculations and environmentalgoals. If the total package depends on shipping to many distant points, this is a clear violation ofenvironmental code. As an example, shipping from the Orient to U.S. utilizes a significant amount ofenergy.4. The bleaching process in manufacturing white paper must be considered. There are many forms ofbleaching that are harmful to the environment. You should specify FSC Certified products.5. Sustainability - forests that are grown with good harvest, efficient farming practices are important

Common Environmental Myths
1. Plastic made with bio-degradable additives eliminate litter but do not support friendly recycling.2. Although recycling plastic is possible, it is much more difficult to recycle post-consumer plastic for packaging. Itis visually very difficult to separate the different types of plastic and therefore recycle it. Theexceptions are items like PET (soda bottles) that are environmentally friendly and easily identifiable. Also, because of the different
base colors of plastic, recycled plastic takes on a grey tint.
